Tsunami lesson plan resources

Source(s):  State Government of Victoria

This is a comprehensive website about tsunamis. Topics include: what is a tsunami, how tsunamis occur, the impact they have on the environment and people; developments in warning systems; and how to prepare in the event of a tsunami. Resource sections include: Key learning areas; Objectives; Get the facts, with six lesson plans; Take time to investigate, with case studies and activities; Tsunami – The Ultimate Guide, which is an interactive resource, a school kit and lesson plans; and the Questacon Tsunami Show about tsunami awareness. The resource includes links to supporting resources and other relevant information.

The resource is also highly relevant for the year 6, 8 and 9 science curriculum. It relates to at least six content descriptions across these year levels. It is particularly relevant for the content descriptions that refer to how science understanding influences the development of practices, inventions and technology, and how science and technology advances are linked. Lesson 3 Tsunami Warnings, Lesson 4 Be Prepared and The Ulitmate Guide sections of the resource are useful; the information they provide about recent advances in tsunami warning systems is comprehensive and highly relevant.

The six lessons within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to demonstrate and build their knowledge about tsunamis. Lesson 5 Report a Tsunami and Lesson 6 Build Your Own Resource Guide, provide students with opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of the scientific and geographical concepts explored throughout the resource.
