Rising sea levels have worsened the destruction that routine tidal flooding causes in US coastal communities. Cultural anthropologists are working to identify flood-prone locations, key individuals, and intervention strategies that lead to community-based mitigation in vulnerable communities.

Using probabilistic modeling and analysis, as well as advanced computer simulation, a research team at Lehigh University has developed the tools and techniques necessary to assess the effects of multi-hazards on infrastructure. Their latest research integrates the three most common failure modes for bridges exposed to flooding, hurricanes, tsunamis, and other extreme hydrologic events into a comprehensive risk assessment framework.

Adaptation strategies to reduce hurricane threats to society need to be formulated, according to a new study. With a rising number of residential buildings in coastal areas compounded by the increasing risk of climate change impacts, the cost of damages along the coast are expected to continue to rise.

Mission

Lehigh is a premier residential research university, ranked in the top tier of national research universities each year. Lehigh is a coeducational, nondenominational, private university that offers a distinct academic environment of undergraduate and graduate students from across the globe.

The organization has no registered commitments.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
