Description

With the growing nature of risks and hazards in urban areas leading to crises globally, a multi hazard urban resilience approach is needed to prevent and minimize losses from disasters and develop safer and sustainable human settlements. UN-Habitat’s City Resilience Profiling Programme (CRPP) is developing a comprehensive and urban planning and management approach founded on the principles of ‘resilience’ that dynamically underpin and improve capacity to protect urban citizens and their assets.

Through CRPP, partner cities will benefit from:
1) improving understanding of what resilience means, how to measure and where respective cities stand with regards to their resilience targets
2) galvanizing technical, political and financial support on where to make changes, improvements and investments to build resilience to natural disasters and other crises, and strengthen urban systems and their sustainability
3) operational menu of global and country specific tools and expertise in addressing urban resilience
4) strengthening multi stakeholder coordination (urban managers, planners, architects, politicians, community members, private sector, and others).

The proposed 1 day pre-event aims to bring pilot cities, humanitarian and development agencies, NGOs and RedCross, programme partners and steering group members to outline key actions and programmatic elements of the city resilience programme.

Objectives:
- To share updates and status of city resilience programme with partners and stakeholders
- Discuss and share programme framework and content of city resilience profiles and tools and receive feedback
- Introduce 10 pilot cities and short synopsis of strengths and weaknesses in their respective cities on urban resilience
- Define messages and inputs for the Global Platform for DRR

Expected Outcomes

1. Expectations of pilot cities, partners, UN agencies and stakeholders agreed
2. Key actions and activities for city resilience profiling programme agreed
3. Articulation of expectations, scope and criteria for city resilience profiles and tools for improving urban resilience in cities at risk of disasters discussed and agreed upon
4. Steering committee and reference group formalized and TORs discussed
5. Articulation of key messages and inputs for the Global Platform for DRR
