From February to May 2013, UNISDR setup a collaborative blog on Tumblr for the Global Platform. Over 100 posts were published on the website, with many coming from contributions by Governments, NGOs, UN Agencies, volunteers, and the public. The posts answered the following three questions:

  • Why is disaster risk reduction important to you?
  • How can we create a disaster resilient society and planet?
  • How are you preparing for the 2013 Global Platform?

From February to April, UNISDR sent out a call for photos to be exhibited at the Fourth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction. The response was overwhelming as over 300 photos were submitted. This made the job difficult for the jury who had only 23 spots to fill. You can see the photos that were selected in the carousel below.

  • What does Disaster Risk Reduction look like to you?
  • What kind of activities can help people be more resilient to disasters?
  • What does a resilient planet look like to you?

General Rules

  • Participation is free of charge.
  • The competition is open to the public, members of the UN system, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and participants of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.
  • Both amateur and professional photographers are welcomed to submit photos.
  • Deadline for submissions is Friday, 19 April 2013. Entries received after that date will not be considered for exhibition.

Photo Specifications

  • Only digital photos, in colour or black and white, will be accepted.
  • Images should be in high resolution – ideally 5616 x 3744 pixels, or a 5 to 7 mb JPG or 10-12 mb TIF.
    To find the pixels dimensions of an image, Mac users can control-click on an image and select Get Info from the pop-up menu. For PC users, right-click on an image file, select Properties from the pop-up menu, then select the Summary tab and click on the Advanced button.
  • Photo files must be submitted in JPEG format.
  • All photos submitted must have been taken by the participant himself/herself or have been granted rights to use.
  • Photos should neither violate the rights of a third party, nor contain offensive content.
  • The organizers have the right to exclude photos if they do not conform to the above conditions.

Judging

  • The jury of judges will be a select group of UNISDR staff and organizers of the 2013 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.
  • The jury will select the best photographs from each participant for exhibition (see below).
  • The jury’s decisions are final.
  • The final selection of photos will be announced on the 2013 Global Platform website and participants will be notified by email.
  • The final selection of photos will be exhibited and displayed on the website.

Exhibition

In addition to displaying the photos online, the final selection of photos will be physically exhibited.

  • During the Fourth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (May 2013).
  • Along the shores of Lake Geneva (tentatively scheduled for September 2013).
  • Other photo exhibitions organized by UNISDR around the issue of disaster risk reduction.
  • The jury’s decisions are final.

Copyright

The copyright of submitted photos will be owned by the participating photographers. The submitted photos will be released for the “non-exclusive” use by UNISDR. Such use will be restricted to promotion, publicity, news, informational and education purposes related to UNISDR’s work on disaster risk reduction. Photographers will be identified as the authors of the photos to which they will retain the copyright.

Are you ready to submit your photos?

  • Multiple photos can be submitted.
  • Each photo needs to be accompanied with a description. Photos without a description will not be considered.
  • Each photo needs to be accompanied by a credit of who took the photo. Should an organization be granted rights to a photo taken by a photographer, credit will be given to both the photographer and organization.
  • To avoid exceeding the maximum message size limits associated with most e-mail accounts, it is recommended to use a file transfer service. The following are examples of services that are free to use - WeTransfer (https://www.wetransfer.com/) - DropBox (https://www.dropbox.com/) - Google Drive (https://drive.google.com/).
