Description

This special event seeks to promote the Longer Term Food Security Initiative of the Red Cross Red Crescent (RC/RC), targetting 15 African National Societies. It aims to reduce food insecurity in communities vulnerable to disasters and/or affected by HIV/AIDS through building resilience. It will inform participants about the RC/RC achievements, challenges and the highlight the link between food security and the HFA. The Speakers will be two African National Societies representatives and a WFP representative.


Expected Outcomes

- Participants are familiarised with the RC/RC Africa Longer-Term Food Security Initiative (ALTFSI)and update on progress of its implementation

- The linkages between Food Security and DRR are discussed and understood among participants in view of RC/RC and Partners experience


Agenda

- A short overview of food insecurity, its linkage with risk reduction and climate change
- Red Cross/Red Crescent commitments
- Launching of the ALTFSI and progress made since Addis
- The RC Working together at the Global, Zone and country levels, working with partners in Food security (FAO, WFP, EU, AU, Banks and others)
- Integration with other RC programmes, linking Food security to the Global platform outcomes
- Major challenges
- The way forward
