Following on from the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Third Session of the Pacific Platform for Disaster Risk Management with the theme "Working together to protect Pacific communities from the risks posed by natural and climate related hazards" took place in Auckland, New Zealand from 1- 5 August 2011.

The United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction Chief Margareta Wahlstrom, in her opening message at the Platform said that two central themes ‘leadership’ and ‘partnership building for disaster risk management and climate change adaptation’ resonated well with the deliberations at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction. The Chair’s Summary of the Global Platform, amongst other, called for ways to better support local communities at the frontline of disaster and climate change impacts, and to ensure that national growth does not increase local risks. It also called for strengthened political engagement and improved risk governance capacities.
