Background

Five Netherlands-based humanitarian, development and environmental organizations, with support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have formed an alliance to reduce the impact of hazards on vulnerable communities. They are the Netherlands Red Cross, the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, CARE Nederland, Cordaid, and Wetlands International: the “Partners for Resilience” (PfR).

Key areas

1. Strengthening community resilience.
Work at local level will be carried out in close collaboration with communities and encompass disaster preparedness and early warning, livelihood security, preventing environmental degradation, poverty reduction, and the protection of water resources.

2. Empowering civil society.
The PfR aim to increase the capacities of civil society organizations (CSO) working on reducing disaster risk and strengthen cooperation between government knowledge centres and nongovernmental actors, essential if community resilience is to be reinforced. The work will include: risk analysis; risk-reduction plans; early warning across a range of timescales; support to communities and civil society.

3. Policy dialogue.
The PfR will seek to create a policycontext more conducive to DRR and CCA at the local, national and international level to make communities, landscapes and institutions all more resilient.

 Purpose of position

Wetlands International is seeking an experienced and innovative Project Manager for Mangrove Capital, an exciting new partnership initiative on mangrove conservation, focusing initially in Indonesia but with relevance to the whole tropics. The project will bring together and mobilise dispersed knowledge and experience about mangrove values and will enable government and private sector partners to better manage their mangrove forests. The successful candidate will manage a complex, multi-partner international project and leverage new partners and resources for pilot applications in the field. S/he will organise cutting edge action research on mangrove services and values, contribute to the design of new approaches for mangrove management and restoration and facilitate the integration of research findings into coastal policies and practices.

The Mangrove Capital project is an initiative that promotes the values of mangroves for economic development and providing resilience of coastal communities. A main focus of this project will be to develop mangrove-based climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction strategies, where mangrove belts are applied for coastal defense.

Requirements

- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- A relevant scientific track record on natural resources management, with a keen interest in coastal ecosystems
- Regular travel to the project areas.
