This annual report reviews last 2011 environmental challenges and focuses on scientists and policy makers' headway on addressing them through new discoveries and investments. The book: (i) presents the most important events and developments from the year, starting with climate change, extreme weather events and related disaster risk management issues such as the drought response in the Horn of Africa; (ii) gives a picture of the status of key environmental indicators; and (iii) highlights two emerging issues in detail: the benefits of soil carbon and the decommissioning of nuclear power plants. It is intended to strengthen the science-policy interface by informing interested parties about the most relevant environmental issues.
