Combating desertification, traditional knowledge and modern technology for the sustainable management of dryland ecosystems
This publication features the proceedings of an International Workshop, held in June 2004 in Elista, Republic of Kalmykia (Russian Federation), and which included a field trip to the Chernyje Zemli Biosphere Reserve. The workshop discussed traditional and local forms of knowledge as well as modern technologies which help to conserve soil fertility and which have proven successful for the rehabilitation of degraded drylands using also sustainable agricultural and pastoral practises. This workshop was organized by UNESCO and its Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB), the MAB National Committee of Russia and the Kalmyk Institute for Humanities Research.
