Resilient rice: policy briefcase
This evaluation report explains how flood-tolerant rice reduced risk for smallholder farmers in Odisha, India and encouraged additional investment in their farms, resulting in substantially increased yields in both flood and non-flood years. The study is part of a long-term partnership with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), which developed Swarna-Sub1. In 2014, IRRI estimated that over 10 million Indian farmers had gained access to stress-tolerant seed varieties, including Swarna-Sub1. Marginalized farmers often cultivate low-lying flood-prone land, like in Odisha. They will thus benefit from these efforts the most.
