IntoAction 4: 2012 RISK Award - Making the city of Beira resilient to floods and cyclones
This final report provides information on the results of the 2012 RISK Award, where an early flood warning project in the city of Beira, Monzambique, was honoured as the winner. The project was part of a national scheme initiated by the GIZ Mozambique and the National Institute of Disaster Management, INGC. Just six months later, the project was able to surpass pivotal milestones. The flooding risk in the poor districts of Beira has now been reduced with simple but effective measures.
The report describes the project called "the Buzi model-Early warning in rural areas", how it works, its importance, implementation and practical application. As part of the conclusion it proposes four key areas for future action: (i) Intervention of operative personnel on the ground, (ii) Members and coordination within the city’s EOC, (iii) Communication and information management and (iv) The use of DRM tools (maps, plans, etc).
