Tokyo police's Twitter account for disaster info turns 10 years old

Wednesday marked 10 years since Tokyo police launched a Twitter account to post information on simple measures related to disasters that can be implemented in daily life.

The MPD created the account after it became aware of the need to send out accurate information, following the spread of misinformation regarding gangs of thieves and rape victims after the March 2011 major earthquake and tsunami.

The account has posts about things the division members actually do, such as "We eat emergency food once a month at our home" and "I carry a list of emergency contacts," in addition to tips should a disaster happen, including how to use aluminum foil to warm one's feet and use plastic bottles.

"Disaster prevention measures differ depending on the circumstances," MPD Chief Inspector Takanori Murata, who is responsible for managing the account, said. "We incorporate the perspectives of men and women of all ages."
