Pilipinas Natin forum takes up climate change mitigation and adaptation, food security

Philippines - The third Cabinet cluster, Pilipinas Natin forum, is set for Wednesday (July 13) and will take up climate change mitigation and adaptation, and food security.

The pre-SONA forum, to be broadcast over government network NBN4 and DZRB from 9 to 10:30 a.m., will have as panelists Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo, Secretary Mary Ann Lucille Sering of the Climate Change Commission, and Undersecretary Jing Pacturan representing Agrarian Reform Secretary Virgilio de los Reyes who is abroad.

During the forum, the Philippine Strategy on Climate Change Adaptation 2010 to 2022 will also be discussed.

The forum is part of a series of pre-SONA Cabinet cluster fora under the “Pilipinas Natin” government program which aims to involve the citizenry and the youth in nation-building and in the implementation of the Philippine Development Plan 2011-2016.

During Wednesday’s forum, Paje will discuss government efforts to keep air and water resources clean, the logging moratorium, the National Greening Program, solid waste management, among others.

Montejo will discuss the Department of Science and Technology’s interventions to rehabilitate coral reefs, the landslide sensor, 3D mapping, and weather forecasting using the Doppler radar.

Sering will discuss the impact of climate change mitigation and adaption measures being implemented by the administration.

For his part, Alcala will touch on the impact of climate change to agriculture and what the government is doing to adapt to it.

Pacturan will discuss land tenure improvement and agrarian justice development.

Questions addressed to the panelists will be asked from Puerto Princesa City in Palawan province, an agricultural trading post in Sariaya, Quezon and in Subic where the use of Doppler radar in tracking weather disturbances will be discussed.

Pre-taped comments and questions from Sen. Kiko Pangilinan and from Lorenzo Tan of the World Wildlife Fund will also be shown.
