Malaysia: Dr Wan Azizah suggests less littering will lead to less flooding

Kuantan: Civic-mindedness – particularly with regard to littering – can help reduce the risk of floods in the country, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Azizah Wan Ismail said today.

“The infrastructure (sanitation and drainage system) is good, but the maintenance aspect still needs to be improved on, and the practice of maintaining good hygiene and being responsible over (the environment) needs to be culturally integrated into society.

Dr Wan Azizah said she is satisfied with the National Disaster Management Agency’s (Nadma) level of preparedness, and also pointed out that 429 high-risk flood zones have been identified in the state.

“(Essential) supplies and dry items have also been sent to 118 relief centres across the state since April. The government has allocated RM1 million for supplies and RM2 million for dry items,” she added.
