Heat-induced sleep disorders comparable to health damage from heatstroke: Japan research

Health damage caused by heat-related sleep disorders in Japan's urban areas may be comparable to that of heatstroke, according to an analysis by researchers from the University of Tokyo and other institutions.

To compare the impact of sleep disorders and heatstroke, the research team utilized the "disability adjusted survival year," an indicator that can be used to compare losses due to death or illness in terms of years. This measure calculates, for example, a "loss of 3 years" for 10 years of illness or disability with a severity of 0.3. The severity of sleep disorders is 0.1, which is apparently equivalent to diabetes without complications.

The results showed that in the case of Nagoya, losses due to sleep disorders from 2010 to 2014 were comparable to heatstroke in each of those years. In particular, in 2010, when the nation experienced a record-breaking heat wave, heatstroke was measured at "a loss of about 80 years," while sleep disorders were measured at "a loss of about 280 years." The results were published in a journal by the Japanese Society of Sleep Research.
