On the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Reduction, the vice president and minister of Women’s Affairs of The Gambia has called for greater participation and involvement of stakeholders and all parties in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and other environmental hazards such as the Environmental Climate Change Adaptation, writes Sheriff Janko for the Daily Observer.

“Regarding rights in DRR, women and girls call for a change in the defence of their rights in order to promote a change in paradigm, surrounding their role in DRR. We must understand that ensuring the human rights of women and girls, in turn, strengthen human rights of all in general. As such, we must safeguard the promotion and protection of the human rights of women and girls living in urban areas as well as in rural areas, where environmental degradation and climate change have increased vulnerability to disasters."
