The President of Gambian, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya AJJ Jammeh Babili Mansa has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the provisions of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction for a strong focus on local communities and indigenous peoples with their traditional knowledge and resources, reports the Daily Observer.

He urged the National Disaster Management Agency and all related sector bodies or partners that provide support to this institution to foster more partnership with their gatekeepers of culture and tradition. This, he said, will avail them an opportunity not to only learn but also document relevant traditional information about prevention and mitigation efforts against disasters.

These were contained in a statement read by the minister of Health and Social Welfare, Omar Sey, on behalf of the Gambian leader yesterday on the occasion marking the celebration of the International Day For Disaster Reduction.
