Analysis: Italy quake shows rich nations must do more to prevent disasters

Megan Rowling reports that according to Margareta Wahlstrom, the UN Assistant-Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, said Italy should now review the safety of buildings in quake-prone mountainous regions - a task for which it possesses the science, technology and money.

"I think one has to use these opportunities - when everybody is alert to it - to actually look at questions like do you have to move people out of the buildings and what are the alternatives, and to review hospitals, schools and public buildings," she told AlertNet.
