Passing on Japan’s disaster experience

Source(s): Yomiuri Shimbun

Last month, Japan CSO Coalition for 2015 World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) was established to prepare for the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, scheduled to be held in Sendai in 2015, reports Yomiuri Shimbun's Japan News.

Masaaki Ohashi Ohashi will head the coalition, in which 69 civil society organizations and nongovernmental organizations have taken part. The groups tackle a variety of issues, including support for disaster-hit areas, disaster prevention, poverty and environmental problems.

“Thanks to the improvement and expansion of cyclone shelters, the number of victims has fallen,” Osashi said. “But with the water level of tidal waves rising, the intensity of water-related disasters, determined by rainfall and wind strength, has increased. We must thus boost both our self-help and mutual support,” Ohashi added.
