Vulnerability to climate change: adaptation strategies and layers of resilience - Helping communities adapt: Matching climate change perceptions and policy
This document reports on a study conducted by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) aiming at capturing the grassroots level responses and understanding the climate change adaptation measures that the farmers are practicing across semi-arid tropics (SAT) regions of Asia especially in India, China, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam. The results from SAT regions of India form the basis of this report.
This report also discusses: (i) adaptive capacities of the farmers; (ii) what farmers perceive about their common property resources (CPRs); (iii) perceptions on managing water resources; (iv) crop diversification and technology adaptation; (v) need to build grassroot resilience capacity – enabling policy environment; (vi) government programs on the ground. The report provides policy recommendations based on the grassroots level and macro climate data analysis.
