Practical Information

Security Advisory

Heads of state and other high level personalities have been invited to the UNDRR Second Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, 16-19 June 2009, Geneva. Within UN premises or in premises used for UN conferences as in this case the CICG (International Conference Centre Geneva), security is the responsibility of UNDRR. Outside these premises, ALL external security-related issues are the responsibility of the host country, Switzerland.

In preparation for the Global Platform, a letter has been sent to the Swiss Ambassador requesting mobilization of Federal and Cantonal security authorities to alert them to the arrival of heads of state. The letter has been shared with United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) Safety and Security, Protocol and Legal offices and the CICG Project Manager

All arriving heads of state should alert their permanent missions which will take responsibility for their movements including picking them up at the airport, liaising with airport authorities regarding VIP protocol, arranging for their transportation, accommodation and all other related support while they remain in Geneva.

The Swiss Permanent Mission in Geneva must be kept informed of the arrival in Switzerland of ALL heads of state including dates of arrival which will be passed on to the Swiss by UNDRR on the basis of confirmed registration and attendance.

There may be some instances where some countries have no representation in Geneva. In these cases, governments should approach UNDRR directly.
