Celebration of the 261st anniversary of the 1755 earthquake and tsunami on the Cadiz coasts
Background
On October 26, 2016, a conference took place framed around the effects of this tsunami on the Cadiz coasts, Spain, and other tsunami events in the past (paleotsunamis). The conference was attended by 125 citizens in the Casa de Iberoamérica, Cádiz, with several speakers from IERD, University of Cadiz and the National Geographic Institute.
In the framework of the World Tsunami Awareness Day, the Instituto Español para la Reducción de los Desastres (IERD) and International Campus of Excellence of the Sea ( CEIMAR ) organizations will celebrate the 261st anniversary of the 1755 Earthquake and Tsunami on the Cadiz coasts. As a non-profit organization, IERD hopes to contribute in this way to the first World Tsunami Awareness Day.
What's Included
The IERD has organized a guided visit to the places affected by the tsunami in 1755. The assistance is open to the general public and there is an expected attendance of about 100 people.
Following this event, all the bells in the city of Cadiz will ring at 11:10 am on November 1st to commemorate the exact time in which the tsunami struck in 1755 against the walls of the city and flooded.

This event will begin at the entrance of the Castle of San Sebastian, at 17:00 CET (16:00 GMT), on October 31st.
