International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction Celebration in Georgia

On October 13, 2016 the celebration ceremony of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction has been organised by the Office of the State Security and Crisis Management Council of Georgia, DG European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations  (ECHO) in collaboration with Phase 4 DIPECHO partners: Save the Children, Oxfam GB, Georgian Red Cross Society and Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Deutschland e.V. (ASB) within the framework of “Disaster Risk Reduction to Improve Resilience of Communities and Institutions in the South Caucasus” regional programme.

Representatives of the DG ECHO - Mr. Juha Auvinen - Head of Unit; Mr. Mamar Merzouk- Head of Office Ukraine; Mr. Srdan Stojanovic - RRC; Mr. Carlos Afonso- Head of Office (Almaty), also the representives of various international and local organisations, authorities of the Georgian Ministries, children with and without disabilities;  and the members of Georgian community were present at the ceremony. 

During the event, the following performances were presented by the four partner organisations:

  • Performance on how to behave during an earthquake by children from the deaf and hard of hearing special school facilitated by Save the Children;
  • Guests were welcomed to see the DRR photo exhibitions displayed and films screened showcasing the Partners’ programmes and 4 stands by all Partners presenting different types of attractions, including:
    • Presentation of First Aid basic elements in theory and practice for children and invited guests in a special tent, introducing them to Family Emergency Plan (Red Cross);
    • Presentation of ‘Children’s DRR Innovation Lab’ with theoretical introduction and practical exercises of innovations related to disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation (Oxfam);
    • Integration exercise of children with and without disabilities - coloring the picture on Drop, Cover, Hold on.  Awards – helmets for children (ASB);
    • First Aid activity (ASB and SSK);

Guests were welcomed the to explore outside the following activities:

  • A joint EMA-Red Cross-Oxfam simulation exercise to demonstrate emergency action to children, bringing emergency services, medical service, police, fire brigade with vehicles and some equipment to present it for children in the yard outside the venue (Save/ASB to support Red Cross and Oxfam re: demonstrations);
  • Race on wheelchairs in veranda (ASB + Volunteers);
  • A joint Quiz for children.
