About

The Water as Leverage (WaL) methodology is an inclusive, integral, design-based approach for the development of projects, programs and transformation enhancing towards urban water resilience. Water as Leverage builds on experiences in a series of initiatives globally, spanning Asia, Latin America, Europe, and Africa. A central principle in the WaL methodology is on finance and aligning financing approaches with SDGs ambition.

Starting from the philosophy that ‘it takes millions to invest billions wisely’, the Water as Leverage programmes intend to invest these catalytic first millions, with the aim of leveraging the necessary investment for the implementation of catalytic projects, which in turn leverage water to build urban climate resilience. In the masterclass, we will delve into the experiences in Water as Leverage programs and try to answer the questions - What practices have been used to mobilize finance? What are insights and lessons learned and how can these be included in pathways forward and design of new initiative?

The insights gained during this masterclass will help deep dive into the experiences in financing innovative solutions for urban flood management during the session at the International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (ICDRI) 2024. Key experts, representing diverse roles, background, and experiences, will share their experiences and co-create insights and pathways forward in dialogue with the participants in the masterclass. A reading list will be provided by the organizers to participants prior to the session.
