Overall Objective

To build urban resilience and increase the efficiency of disaster risk reduction (DRR) and disaster management (DM) programmes in cities and urban areas in a changing climate by enhancing Red Cross Red Crescent institutional and operational capacities on urban DRR/DM.

Expected Outputs

  • International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ (IFRC) “Position and Key Messages on urban DRR/DM”will be endorsed. These would be used for post 2015, as well for longer term advocacy and positioning at national, regional and local levels by NSs/IFRC.
  • Red Cross Red Crescent (a) Programme Approach; (b) “Guidelines for Engagement, Planning and Programming in Urban DRR/DM” are discussed and endorsed.
  • IFRC 50 Cities DRR Initiative endorsed and launched.

  • Urban risks: Present situation and future prospects, where and how should we go? (Vision and approach)
  • What is needed to make measurable progress in reducing urban risks and responding to urban disasters effectively? (Programming, methodologies and tools)
  • How to reach more communities and vulnerable people in cities? (Scaling up, multistakeholder cooperation and capacity development)
