About:

The Health and Humanitarian Logistics (HHL) Conference provides an open, neutral platform for interactive discussion of the common opportunities and challenges facing both the public health and humanitarian sectors around the world. Panel topics will address:

  • Health Crisis Supply Chains and the Ebola Response
  • Improving Public Health Systems in Developing Countries
  • Infrastructure and Capacity Building: Start Now for a Better Future
  • Planning for and Responding to Complex Humanitarian Emergencies.

Food insecurity, epidemics, conflicts, and displaced populations are examples of complex emergencies that can result from a combination of natural disasters and man-made causes including political instability or other sources of vulnerability. The logistics of providing food, medical care, or assistance to displaced persons is much more difficult to plan for and respond to under these conditions. Panelists will discuss how to anticipate the need for action, approaches for collaborating among organizations to effect change, and how to strengthen capacity to respond regionally.

Participants come from international and community-based non-governmental organization (NGOs), United Nations agencies, governmental agencies, private sector, donor organizations, and academia to identify priorities and next steps in terms of strategy, policy, investment and further research for organizations across the health and humanitarian sectors.

The conference agenda includes interactive workshops, including one on disaster preparedness in addition to poster sessions on supply chain management and logistics in global health and humanitarian emergency response and long-term development as well as ample opportunities for networking, visits to health and humanitarian facilities in Johannesburg area, and leisure excursions in South Africa.
