Two Risk and Resilience Researchers

The Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich is a centre of competence for Swiss and international security policy. It offers security policy expertise in research, teaching, and consultancy.

Our think tank serves as an important link between academia and practitioners and as a point of contact and reference for the wider public.

The Risk and Resilience Team is looking for two highly motivated researchers to join the team. The Team conducts research and provides policy advice in three areas: (a) Risks (e.g., changes in the risk landscape, methods for risk identification and analysis); (b) Disaster Preparedness (e.g., risk preparedness, individual and societal resilience, protection of critical infrastructures); and (c) Crisis Management and Civil Protection (e.g., processes and structures, adaptations, use of new technologies).

Job description

As a researcher in the Risk and Resilience Team you focus on the issue areas outlined and related topics. Depending on your expertise and interests, you will be tasked with accumulating specialized knowledge and insights, and assist Swiss authorities to cope with specific challenges. This also includes lending on-demand comprehensive policy advice and being able to present your expertise and knowledge clearly and concisely.

You will publish your findings in policy relevant publications and disseminate your knowledge through dialogue with policy-makers and other relevant stakeholders.

Ideally, you would be able to join as soon as possible.

Your profile

At a minimum, you should have a MA degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Political Science, Risk Analysis, Resilience, Crisis and Disaster Management, Security Studies, Public Policy or Environmental Sciences). Recent MA graduates are encouraged to apply. We are particularly looking for researchers who have experience and/or interest in one or more of the following research topics: (a) socio-technical resilience, (b) anticipation and risk analysis methods, (c) technology development and digitalization. An independent and well-organized working style, as well as excellent communication skills and the ability to work in an international team are essential.

The CSS is a multi-lingual working environment, so proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of one Swiss national language – or the willingness to acquire German language skills on the job – are an asset. Work experience in international organizations, think tanks, or government agencies are an advantage, as is knowledge of the Swiss political landscape.
