An Experienced Researcher (postdoc) position is available for one year within the European Marie Curie Initial Training Network “CHANGES”: ‘Changing Hydro-meteorological Risks – as Analysed by a New Generation of European Scientists’. The overall aim of the network, financed by the European Community, is to analyze the effect of environmental changes on the risk for hydro-meteorological hazards and management. Twelve Early Stage Researchers (PhD students) have been working on this topic since January 2011.

Background:

Risk communication is indispensable for enhancing society's or a region's capacity to cope with disasters. It forms the link between hazard and risk analysis and decision making and between risk experts, authorities and the public at risk. Effective risk communication is a precondition for risk prevention and preparedness. Increasingly, visuals such as risk maps are used for communicating risks.

Objectives:


This post-doc position is oriented to evaluating the effectiveness of risk communication using innovative visuals, such as (multimedia) visuals or Apps. ER 5 will work closely together with the other partners in the CHANGES network, in particular with ESR 12 (risk visualization and communication) and ER6 (developing the computer tools for risk visualization, TU Dortmund). The ER will also spend time with Alert Solutions in Delft.

Requirements:

The candidate is required to fulfill the specific Marie Curie Initial Training network rules (see Eligibility). Moreover, he or she should have:
- Knowledge of communication and visualization methods and techniques
- Knowledge of social science research methodology
- Knowledge of and preferably experience with disaster risk management
- Good English skills. French, Italian, Polish or Romanian are an asset.
Some experience with programming is an asset, for instance with:
- server- and client based programming of web-Applications or computer-based visualization of hazard and risks

Eligibility:


- A PhD degree and maximally 5 years of work experience after obtaining the MSc degree
or
- An MSc degree in (geo-)informatics or another relevant discipline and at least 4 years full time research experience
In addition, the candidate may not have resided or carried our his/her main activities in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to his/her appointment.
