Global mortality losses are concentrated in intensive disasters

Between 1975 and 2008, 78.2% of disaster mortality was concentrated in only 23 events. Since 1990, more than 45% of total disaster mortality was concentrated in just four events:

These events may give the impression that mortality is on the rise, but the trend is not statistically significant and would change depending on the time period chosen and the specific intensive disasters occurring in that period.
