Highlights: Africa Regional Assessment Report 2020

Source(s):  United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)

Countries in sub-Saharan Africa have developed a range of strategies, policies and institutional arrangements to protect human health, property, livelihoods and the environment from the impact of disasters. At the same time, given the increasingly complex nature of risk and its impacts, there remains substantial scope for improvement.

The Africa Regional Assessment Report 2020 (AfRAR) analyses the continental challenges, opportunities, innovations, lessons learned,  and progress made in implementing the Sendai Framework in Africa. The AfRAR provides recommendations on:

  • Systemic risk (p. 5);
  • Urban risk (p. 7);
  • Gender-sensitive Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) (p. 9);
  • Science and technology in DRR (p. 10);
  • Investments n DRR (p. 12);
  • DRR at community-level (p. 14);
  • DRR strategies across Africa countries (p. 16);
  • Policy coherence between DRR, Climate Change Adaptation and sustainable development (p. 18).
