The Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies (IDMVS) is a non-profit academic and research institute for encouraging, sponsoring and promoting multi-disciplinary basic and action research aimed at burgeoning and sharing the comprehensive knowledge on the vulnerabilities of disaster affected people of global order specially the women, men, children, disabled, indigenous communities, minorities, disadvantaged and destitute of developing world including Bangladesh. The institute will also ventilate the research activities, develop policy planning in disaster field and will assess its implementation in a more meaningful way. It will primarily act as an academic and research institute to share the disaster and vulnerability related experiences and knowledge sharing. Moreover, it will involve in policy implications for the policy planners and decision-makers. One of the visions of the institute is the inclusion of disaster in policy agenda to ensure equality in socio-economic, legal and political spheres leading to distributive justice in addressing the disasters and vulnerabilities.
It may be mentioned that for conducting, sharing and facilitating disaster related knowledge, experiences and skills, the Department of Sociology has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP) of Ministry of Food and Disaster Management (MoFDM) on 4th December, 2008. Soon after signing the MoU, the Department of Sociology has introduced the CDMP assisted (both financial and technical) programs on disaster management in the areas of certificate course, post-graduate diploma course, workshop for facilitating disaster related knowledge, and grant for conducting research by post graduate students. Moreover, as per scope of the MoU, the Department of Sociology has taken the initiative to introduce Professional Post Graduate Master Programme in Disaster Management.
