Mission

ICLR's mission is to reduce the loss of life and property caused by severe weather and earthquakes through the identification and support of sustained actions that improve society's capacity to adapt to, anticipate, mitigate, withstand and recover from natural disasters.

Disaster Reduction Goal

ICLR is a world-class centre for multi-disciplinary disaster prevention research and communications. Institute staff and research associates are international leaders in wind and seismic engineering, atmospheric science, risk perception, hydrology, economics, geography, health sciences, public policy and a number of other disciplines.

Policies and Programmes in DRR

Best practices to reduce the risk of basement flooding

Actions to enhance the resilience of existing homes to damage from severe weather and earthquakes

Design and construction of new homes resilient to damage from natural disasters

Insurance for extreme events

Membership in Key Networks

ICLR provides a forum for Canada's insurance industry to work with leaders from the disaster risk reduction and adaptation research community. This includes montly webinars, quarterly meetings of insurance leaders and researchers, and newsletters.

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

ICLR is Co-Chair of Canada's Adaptation to Climate Change Working Group on Municipal Infrastructure and Housing.

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

ICLR's focus is on assessing and addressing the risk of loss and damage from basement flooding, urban earthquakes, severe wind and wildland fire.

ICLR Showcase Homes demonstrates risk reduction actions for homeowners.

ICLR safety brochures provide advice to homeowners to assess the risk of damage from climatre extremes and best practices to build resilience.

ICLR Co-Chairs Canada's National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction's Science and Technology Committee.

ICLR's Builders' Guide documents best practices for the design and construction of disaster resilience homes, and provides a foundation for championing change in the Building Code.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

ICLR preparedness for insurance companies.
