Mission

Ekurhuleni provides sustainable and people centered development services that are affordable, appropriate and of high quality. The government focuses on social, environmental and economic regeneration of the city and communities, as guided by the principles of Batho Pele and through the commitment of a motivated and dedicated team.

Disaster Reduction Goal

To effectively use plans and institute measures in partnership with all stakeholders, in dynamically implementing Disaster Management.

Policies and Programmes in DRR

Awareness programme for floods.
Awareness programme for shack fires.
Risk and hazard identification programme
Preparedness in Homes for the Aged.

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

Ekurhuleni has an approved policy of the Municipal Council which supports disaster risk reduction as part of its Disaster Management responsibilities

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

A Risk and vulnerability assessment was undertaken at great cost in 2007 and currently plans are being developed to begin a community based risk assessment programme.
The Municipality is connected to the SA Weather Services and uses information to inform residents via the local radio stations of impending events.

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

Awareness programmes are geared towards project at shopping centres.
A new awareness project is in the very early stages of development.

Reducing underlying risk factors (HFA 4)

Building plans are well developed.
The City has an approved Spatial Development Framework with Local SDF's in place which guide development and reduces disaster risk.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

Preparedness plans are well developed and form part of the Integrated Development PLan (IDP) in terms of legislative requirements.
