Mission

Green Cross Environmental Emergency Preparedness Programme was launched at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) in Brazil in June 2012. It has both humanitarian and environmental dimensions. The Programme helps building and reinforcing local capacities in developing countries to prepare for industrial/technological accidents and other man-made disasters.

Disaster Reduction Goal

Green Cross Environmental Emergency Preparedness is dedicated to saving lives, avoiding environmental and economic damage. It aims at empowering local level actors, as well as advocating for environmental emergency preparedness among all stakeholders at global level.

Policies and Programmes in DRR

Humanitarian and ecological impacts of disasters are intrinsically linked. Environmental emergencies, such as industrial and technological accidents, affect both people and environment. Disasters kill and injure people, damage houses and infrastructure, destroy ecosystems and bring economic damage. By helping improve emergency preparedness, Green Cross is contributing to the protection of local population and environment.

Membership in Key Networks

- OCHA and UNEP International Advisory Group on Environmental Emergencies
UNEP/Awareness and Preparedness for Emergencies at Local Level (APELL) Network

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

Through an array of advocacy, awareness building and policy-making initiatives, Green Cross helps improve preparedness at all levels for environmental emergencies, including industrial and technological accidents. Green Cross is enhancing dialogues with all actors and stakeholders so as to mainstream the issue of environmental emergencies into the overall process of sustainable development.

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

Green Cross is assisting communities and local authorities in developing countries with building capacities and knowledge to anticipate and respond effectively to the impact of likely hazard events. Preparedness activities include contingency planning, communications, information management, coordination arrangements, personnel training, community drills and simulation exercises, evacuation plans, public education, awareness raising and strengthening indigenous knowledge.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

Green Cross is developing a comprehensive programme and designing projects to help communities and local authorities in Asia, the Pacific, Africa and Latin America build preparedness capacity for environmental emergencies.
