Mission

For more than 20 years, PDC has worked side by side with governments, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and humanitarian assistance agencies around the globe to help save lives and mitigate loss using cutting-edge technology and sound scientific practices that reduce disaster risk.

As an applied research center managed by the University of Hawaii, PDC integrates ground-breaking research, science, and reliable information into its powerful technology, DisasterAWARE™. Through its cutting-edge technology and in-depth national research and assessment programs, PDC empowers disaster managers and decision makers worldwide with the tools they need to respond to hazards more effectively, to reduce disaster risk, and to improve disaster planning, response, and recovery for a safer world.

Early Warning / Multi-Hazard Monitoring

We develop state-of-the-art solutions to help people on the paths of storms, in the shadows of volcanoes, low lying flood zones, and other hazard prone areas better prepare for the impact of extreme hazards. PDC’s early warning and multi-hazard monitoring technology, DisasterAWARE™, is being used to protect millions of lives and has been customized for governmental and nongovernmental use with native language support in multiple countries including:

- ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre)
- Thailand
- Vietnam
- Indonesia
- CDEMA
- Myanmar (to leverage AHA Centre system)

Risk Assessments

Our scientific assessment provides critical information about the underlying factors that exacerbate disaster risk—such as socioeconomic vulnerability, gender inequality, lack of access to basic services like clean water, healthcare, education, and telecommunications to name just a few. This information helps decision makers prioritize investments as well as design more effective national plans to mitigate disaster losses, prepare for, respond, and recover from hazards.
