Titan America group is one of the premier cement and building materials producers in the Eastern United States.
Titan America is focused on promoting and educating elected officials, authorities, trades and consumers on resilient construction. Resilient construction is the foundation of resilient investment which leads to resilient and truly sustainable development. Resilient construction is also a strategy to address climate change adaptation.
Titan America conducts these efforts directly and in collaboration with associations with which it is active. These include the Concrete Joint Sustainability Initiative (CJSI), the Portland Cement Association, the National Ready Mix Concrete Association and others. It is also working closely with the insurance industry through the Institute for Business and Home Safety.
Resilience Workshops: Developed by CJSI, Titan American is conducting two such workshops during 2012 in Florida and Virginia.
Tax Incentive for Resilient Reconstruction: Titan America has taken a lead industry role in getting legislation introduced in US Congress for a Residential ($3K) and Commercial ($6K) tax credit for reconstructing buildings in declared disasters areas under more resilient standards.
Fortified Ratings: Titan America is pioneering the application of IBHS’s Fortified Rating system for resilient home construction beyond what building codes require in hazard sensitive areas (areas prone to hurricanes, tornadoes and floods)
Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructure: Titan America is leading efforts to construct and refurbish high traffic roads with more lifecycle durable and long lasting materials in Florida, Virginia and Carolinas. Efforts include changing long standing state policies and opening up competition. A recent success is the refurbishment of Route 58 in Virginia.
Titan America is a member of the Disaster Risk Reduction - Private Sector Partnership (DRR-PSP) and has committed to the 5 Essentials for Business in Disaster Risk Reduction.
1. Advocacy to elected officials and authorities on strengthening building codes, resilient infrastructure strategies and tax incentives for resilient reconstruction following disasters
2. Promotion of Fortified Rating for resilient homes and buildings
3. Local seminars and workshops on resilient construction to authorities, engineers, builders and owners
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
