The Disaster Research Institute at Preston University, Pakistan, was established in November 2005 with the goal of dealing with acute humanitarian and social problems arising out of disasters, such as the devastating earthquake of October 2005 that hit Northern Pakistan. DRI is actively involved in research in various areas related to disaster risk mitigation and management. It has also mandated itself to impart professional training to employees of institutions engaged in disaster mitigation, disaster risk reduction and disaster risk management, and also to individuals keen to enter this important field. To pursue this goal, DRI currently offers six months diploma courses in DRR, MS in DRM, Environment Management , OH&S.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
