Mission

As a member of the Red Cross Movement, the Danish Red Cross (DRC) is part of the world's largest humanitarian and development network of volunteers and staff. The vision of the DRC is through voluntary action to prevent and alleviate discrimination, human suffering and distress. In Denmark, 20,000 volunteers work on making a difference for lonely and poor people. DRC's national and international work is mutually inspiring. Volunteers in DRC's 220 local branches throughout Denmark contribute to the international work through income from second hand shops and through twining programme.

Disaster Reduction Goal

DRC supports National Societies policies and programmes aiming at reducing risks from potential, recurrent, and prolonged hazards in exposed communities, while capitalising on the capacity of communities to cope with disasters

Policies and Programmes in DRR

Realising that communities are often vulnerable to a multitude of hazards, DRC pursues integrated DRR, targeting multiple sources of risk and bridging multiple sectors including basic health care and sanitation, food security, improved shelter, domestic hazards, as well as road safety. A total number of 9 DRR programmes are currently supported by the DRC .

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

DRC DRR supported programmes aims at strengthening our partner's auxiliary role in national Disaster Management Plans.

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

In community based DRR, communities are supported in mapping and analysing hazards, and in identifying early warning systems and evacuation plans to cope with risk. DRC supports early warning systems in Mozambique, Nepal, Liberia, Kenya, Indonesia, Pakistan, Cambodia and South Sudan.

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

Increasing resilience of vulnerable people living in disaster prone areas through awareness raising is part of DRC supported programme activities in Kenya, Mozambique, Nepal, Indonesia, Pakistan, Cambodia, Georgia and Armenia.

Reducing underlying risk factors (HFA 4)

Integrating DRR into sustainable development planning and programming contributes to reducing underlying risk factors is part of all DRC DRR supported programme activities.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

Strengthening our partners' disaster preparedness systems at all levels is part of DRC supported programme activities in Mozambique, Nepal, Pakistan, Syria, Palestine, South Sudan and Indonesia

Other activities

Interventions in preventing and preparing for and /or mitigating for
1. Accidents stemming from dense settlements such as fires, traffic accidents and contamination of drinking water
2.Conflicts such as post-election violence
