The Finnish Red Cross is the most significant Finnish civic organisation providing humanitarian aid and one of the biggest actors in international development cooperation. The Finnish Red Cross has participated in international humanitarian aid operations since its foundation in 1877. Disaster Reduction Goal

The aim of the FRC disaster management and risk reduction programme is to strengthen partner National Societies auxiliary role in disaster management and to improve the ability of communities to anticipate, prevent and respond to disasters and to help communities and individuals to recover from disasters and crises better and faster.

Policies and Programmes in DRR

FRC supports partner National Societies' DRR programmes in Argentina, Bolivia, Cambodia, China, El Salvador, Honduras, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Malawi, Nepal, Swaziland, Paraguay, Philippines and Tajikistan.

Red Cross Red Crescent DPRR Working Group

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

FRC works with its partner National Societies to strengthen their auxiliary role in national disaster management, engage in national platforms and influence policy development and legislation.
Community based DRR programmes aim at mobilizing vulnerable communities to create links and foster commitment among local decision makers.

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

Risk assessment, mapping and hazard analysis are key to all FRC supported DRR programmes.
Local early warning systems are developed as part of DRR programmes with partners in Argentina, Cambodia, Honduras, Malawi, Nepal and Philippines.

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

Hazard specific public education and public awareness among people living in disaster prone areas is a key component of FRC supported DRR programmes in all countries.
School based DRR awareness and information form part of FRC supported programmes in Cambodia, Malawi, Nepal and Philippines.

Reducing underlying risk factors (HFA 4)

Risk analysis forms part of development cooperation programme design to reduce the underlying risk factors and protect development gains.
Integrated food security for resilience programmes in Kenya, Malawi and Swaziland.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

Support to National Societies' disaster management and response preparedness systems and capacities at all levels.
Support to IFRC's global disaster management and response system.
Rapid deployment units for field hospital, health clinics, shelter, logistics, IT, relief for domestic and international relief operations.
Coordinator of voluntary rescue teams in Finland.
