Mission

UNDP Ghana works with the Government of Ghana and non-governmental actors to make Ghana resilient against disasters. We facilitate stronger integration of disaster risk reduction into development outcomes. We help foster a culture of anticipatory and deliberate disaster risk reduction action from national level down to the grassroots.

Disaster Reduction Goal

To enhance the effectiveness of national systems and existing institutional arrangements for climate change mitigation, adaptation, and disaster risk reduction, as defined in the Hyogo Framework of Action at the district, regional, and national levels (UN Development Assistance Framework 2012-2016)

- Africa Adaptation Programme (2010-2012)

- Institutional Support to Integrate DRR into National Development Plans (2006-2012)
- Enhanced Capacity for Coordinated Response to Floods in Northern Ghana (2009-2010)
- Enhanced Capacity for Flood Response in Accra (2011-2012)

National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO)

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

- Supported the development of Ghana’s Disaster Risk Reduction/Climate Change Adaptation CCA Action Plan (2011)
- Supported review of DRR Policy (2010)
- Supported the creation of National, Regional and District Platforms on DRR (2009-2012)
- Provided institutional support to National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to enable better coordination and implementation of DRR, preparedness, and response initiatives (2006-2012)

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

- Implementing a project that will establish early warning systems in 10 districts (2013-2015)
- Supported the strengthening of Ghana Meteorological Agency (2010-2012)
- Supported the development of drought and flood hazard maps in five hazard prone districts: Sisala East, Fanteakwa, Keta, West Mamprusi, West Mamprusi, Aowin Suaman (2012)
- Supported the development of a country-wide hazard mapping (2008)

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

- Supported awareness creation on best practices in disaster prevention (2011-2012)
- Conducted assessment of current knowledge of DRR into school curricula (2011)
- Promotion of e gender-responsive culture in DRR (2011)

Reducing underlying risk factors (HFA 4)

- Supported the development of tools and training for mainstreaming DRR into national and district development plans (2009-2010)
- Supported livelihood diversification in areas affected by desertification: West Mamprusi, Talensi-Nabdam, Bawku-West, Garu-Tempane, Lawra, Savelugu-Nanton (2006-2012)
- UNDP contributed to the Making Cities Resilient Campaign as stated below.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

- Supported the training of local communities and Disaster Volunteer Groups to timely respond to disasters (2011-2012)
- Supported development of a National Contingency Plan (2009-2010)
- Supported development of District Disaster Management Plans in Greater Accra and Eastern Region (2010-2012)
- Facilitated organization of national simulation exercise (floods) in collaboration with the UN Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) (2011)
- Supported regional level simulation exercises in the Northern Regions (2011-2012)

Making Cities Resilient Campaign Activities

UNDP Ghana contributed to the Making Cities Resilient Campaign through the following activities.
- Organization of a training on making cities resilient for district and municipal executives in collaboration with CADRI (2011)
- Supported studies on how to integrate climate change and disaster risk reduction challenges and opportunities in urban planning in Accra and Takoradi/Sekondi Municipal Assemblies in collaboration with the University of Ghana (2012)
- Supported the revision of the Building Code in Ghana (2012)
- Supported the development of the Building Guide for Lightly Loaded Structures in Disaster Prone Areas (2011)
- Training in all districts in Greater Region and Northern Region on the building guide for local artisans, building inspectors, and masons (2011-2012)
- Disaster preparedness training of 400 members of disaster volunteer groups in Accra Metropolitan Assembly (2012)
