The Associated Programme on Flood Management supports countries in implementing national strategies for Integrated Flood Management. This approach shifts the focus from flood control to flood management, recognizing that floods have both adverse and beneficial impacts and that they can never be fully constrained. The main activities of the Programme fall under three major categories:
- Providing guidance and advisory materials
- Capacity building
- Developing project proposals
The primary means for carrying out these activities is the Integrated Flood Management Helpdesk, a demand-driven online interface where users can request customized technical support or explore a wide range of available flood management solutions.
Disaster Reduction Goal
The main objective of the Programme is to assist countries in the implementation of Integrated Flood Management, minimizing the loss of life from flooding and maximizing the net benefits from the efficient use of floodplains by promoting an integrated approach to land use, water resources and risk management in river basins.
