Mission

SPIN Global exists to provide solutions that help public and private sector agencies improve coordination prior to a disaster. We enable organizations to jointly plan, train, and operate together effectively as a team and assist one another in the time of need. SPIN Global addresses this coordination challenge by modernizing disaster risk reduction and emergency preparedness programs, with a distinct focus on applied science and the use of technology as a catalyst for change in how coordination is achieved to improve disaster resilience.

Disaster Reduction Goal

To improve the posture of disaster preparedness for private and public organizations.

Policies and Programmes in DRR

SPIN Global improves DRR through coordinated multi-sector information sharing policies and programs within the private sector, in a binational context, within the energy sector and for families and businesses. The CEO is Chair of the National Emergency Management Association Private Sector Committee Information Sharing Task Force, provided lead support to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in the Canada-U.S. Enhanced Resiliency Experiment series, supported the Electric Infrastructure Security Council "Black Sky" project, and is currently launching www.PlanetReady.com to "Uber-ize" disaster preparedness.

Membership in Key Networks

Member of National Emergency Management Association; Member of Smart Cities Council; Member of 1776; Board Member of the Safe & Ready Institute. SPIN Global has committed to the 5 Essentials for Business in Disaster Risk Reduction.

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

Supported DHS Virtual Social Media Working Group, which led to establishment of the Social Media Improvement Act of 2015, signed into law by President Obama, focusing on using social media to improve disaster communications, etc. This led to establishment of an interagency working group focused exclusively on using SMEM to improve DRR.

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

Conducted numerous risk assessments for local, state, federal agencies. Led the integration of the first-ever harmonization of the U.S. Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) and Canadian NAADS system in the Canada-U.S. Enhanced Resiliency Experiment in 2016. This achievement satisfied the requirement of President Obama and Prime Minister Harper in the Beyond the Border Action Plan page 25 to harmonize binational alert and warning systems.

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

Led the DHS Capacity Building Webinar Series. Supported the National Information Sharing Consortium education and public awareness efforts related to national exercises, preparedness, and information sharing. Developing www.planetready.com, an online on-demand platform for education, training, exercises, courses and games related to DRR.

Reducing underlying risk factors (HFA 4)

SPIN Global supports the Federal Emergency Management Agency planning and technical assistance division, focused on improving regional and national hazard plans, and coordinating activities to reduce underlying risk factors.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

SPIN Global has facilitated disaster preparedness training exercises in the U.S. and Canada, and for the National Information Sharing Consortium CHECKPOINT 16 virtual exercise, which had 100+ organizations participate.
