James Cook University’s vision is to be one of the world’s leading tropical research universities. JCU is home to more than 20 specialist centres and institutes, and maintains island, rainforest and outback research stations. More than $23 million in research funding is received annually. Areas of research focus include: biodiversity, sustainable management of tropical ecosystems, global warming, tropical agriculture, tropical health care in remote communities and cultural diversity.
JCU is home to the Centre for Disaster Studies (CDS), a multi-disciplinary research unit presently housed in the School of Tropical Environment Studies and Geography. CDS has acted as the university's face to the public and the professionals in the Emergency Management and Meteorology fields, city councils and other researchers since its establishment in 1979.
