Mission

Create a peaceful society based on equality, transparency and justice, through social mobilization, knowledge and capacity development and advocating the rights of undeserved segments, especially children and women.

Disaster Reduction Goal

Make communities realize about their vulnerabilities and work closely with them to reduce the impact of disasters by assessing risks, planning the existing resources and establishing the warning and response systems.

1. Leading DRR Forum of District Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
2. Member of Provincial DRR Forum of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
3. Member of Food Security Cluster of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

Association for Human Development has formed a DRR Forum in DIstrict Charsadda with participation of more than 25 organizations ranging from international NGOs to Village based organization.

AHD has organized many capacity building workshops for local authorities, line departments and local communities regarding Disaster Risk Reduction.

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

Association for Human Development has done risk assessments in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. AHD followed participatory methodology in risk assessments. During these assessments capacities of local community members were build in different PLA tools. On the basis of results from risk assessments community need based projects were designed and implemented.

AHD has also developed a community based early warning mechanism keeping in view the local indigenous knowledge covering two union council of District Charsadda. This CBEWS is based on efficient and effective communication mechanism between local communities and local authorities. After success of this mechanism, AHD has plans to develop an EWS covering whole District Charsadda.

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

AHD has conducted several awareness raising sessions covering different topics like precautionary measure during floods, earthquakes, how community based early warning mechanism works, precautionary measure regarding different waterborne epidemics etc. AHD has also printed IEC material including flyers, posters, and brochures for awareness raising.

AHD has arranged several awareness raising street theaters and raising walks with participation of community youth, men, women, elders and PWDs in different target communities. The focus of these sessions was to aware communities on the role and responsibilities of VDMCs, local authorities and line departments during different phases of disaster and to enhance their advocacy skills.

Reducing underlying risk factors (HFA 4)

Association for Human Development is implementing multi-sector projects in different villages of District Charsadda focusing on Preparedness, Mitigation and Prevention. These projects include activities related to capacity building of local communities regarding emergency response.

AHD is also focusing on incorporating DRR in environmental management. We are promoting plantation of trees and Mott grass along river banks to protect agriculture land loss due to soil erosion. We are also promoting use of energy efficient stoves in local communities.

AHD is also implementing WASH projects which include capacity building of communities on health and hygiene practices. Further provision of safe drinking water through installation of hand pumps on safe areas and construction of latrines to avoid open defecation.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

Association for Human Developed has developed Community Based Emergency and DRR Plans. These plans include information regarding hazards, disaster timeline, resources available at community level which can be utilized during disaster and roles and responsibilities of local authorities and local DMGs during all phases of CBDRM. These plans were further translated into local language for better understanding of community members and later distributed at household level so that all the community members including men, women, children, elders and persons with disability should have equal access to information.
