Mission

To raise awareness of the need to adapt to climate change, particularly weather related disasters that are becoming more severe as a result of climate change. CCI undertakes this work to help communities, private industry, and conservation NGOs identify the potential for future climate change impacts/ hazards in their area, and develop mitigation projects and action plans that can be implemented to reduce the impact of these hazards.

Disaster Reduction Goal

To save lives, and reduces losses associated with natural disasters.

Policies and Programmes in DRR

Regional Hazard Identification
Regional or community based Hazard Mitigation
Regional Climate Change Studies
Climate Change Adaptation planning for communities, private enterprise, and conservation NG)s and IGOs
Stakeholder Consultation

Membership in Key Networks

International Council of Monuments and Sites/Expert Member of the International Committee on Risk Preparedness

Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN)
Commission of Ecosystem Management (CEM)
Ecosystems and Livelihoods Adaptation Network (ELAN)
Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR)
American Center for Mongolian Studies

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

Working with ministries in Bhutan, Korea and Mongolia to encourage development of pre-disaster mitigation plans that consider the cumulative impacts of development and climate change on critical resources and assets.

Working with the American Center for Mongolian Studies to raise awareness among member organisations of the need for integrating climate change disaster risk reduction planning into development plans and public policy

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

Conducted Climate Change studies for:
* a planned Low Level Radioactive Waste facility in west Texas, to determine the potential for future ground water infiltration into the underground facility, and corresponding dispersal of LLRW into the groundwater.

* a proposed gold mine in southeastern Senegal, to determine climate change impacts on water availability during the life of mine, and after mine closure, to assess potential cumulative impacts of mining & climate change on agricultural sustainability in the region

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

Advisor and co-author on a 2013 UNESCO, UNDRR, ICCROM, ICOMOS/ICORP publication on DRR and Heritage of Resilience

Author on two articles in the Encyclopedia of Crisis Management, Sage Publications, 2013

Presenter at multiple international conferences on Climate Change and DRR (2009-present)

Reducing underlying risk factors (HFA 4)

Worked with local authorities and stakeholders to identify critical infrastructure within their areas of jurisdiction /management authority, and determined the potential risks to these resources from natural and man-made disasters. Worked with the stakeholders to identify mitigation measures to reduce these risks.
Have prepared pre-disaster, multi-hazard mitigation plans for:
* San Diego Office of Emergency Services: 18 Cities in San Diego County, California, USA
* Orange County Water District: 21 Water Districts, California, USA
* Concow-Maidu of Mooretown Rancheria, California, USA
* Viejas Band of Mission Indians, California, USA
* Federated States of Micronesia (contributor)

Disaster Risk Reduction Focal Point(s)

Identifying weather induced disasters that impact different regions, determining the probability of higher frequency and/or greater magnitude events as a result of climate change. Working with stakeholders to develop pre-disaster mitigation plans to minimise the impacts of future climate change induced disasters. Integrating climate change adaptation into disaster risk reduction plans, and development plans.
