Mission

Unit for Disaster Studies (UDS) was established in 1991 in the Department of Geography and Geology at Mona as a focal point to promote interdisciplinary research and teaching in natural hazards and risk management. It serves the entire Caribbean region.

Disaster Reduction Goal

UDS\'s natural hazard risk reduction efforts focus on hazards within the context of the living environment, climate change, analysis and mapping of hazardous phenomenon from an Earth sciences perspective, societal impact of hazards, and risk management.

Policies and Programmes in DRR

Our research fosters an understanding of Earth systems and geologic, geomorphic, tectonic and atmospheric processes which give rise to costly and, often, life-threatening natural phenomena especially in the context of the Caribbean.

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

Unit for Disaster Studies invited the Town Planning Department, Government of Jamaica to participate in the dialogue on the use of hazard maps in city planning. An outcome of this interaction has been the preparation of a document on landslide hazard information in land-use planning available at:
http://www.oas.org/cdmp/document/kma/planning.htm

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

Developing Early Warning Systems in Jamaica:
RAINFALL THRESHOLDS FOR HYDROGEOLOGICAL HAZARDS
http://www.mona.uwi.edu/uds/rainhazards_files/frame.htm

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

A 4 -week geohazards summer training course initited in June 2000, Analysis and management of natural hazards and risks: http://www.mona.uwi.edu/uds/GEOHAZARDS_2001/GEOHAZ2001-CONTENTS.html
Some 71 persons have attended the five course sessions .
A \"Natural Hazards Atlas of Jamaica\" has been compiled. http://uwipress.com/content/natural-hazards-atlas-jamaica

Virtual Disaster Library launched in partnership with CARDIN where hazard maps and power point presentations are posted.

Reducing underlying risk factors (HFA 4)

Pilot project: Mona GeoInformatics Institute ( http://www2.monagis.com/about ) and UDS have developed an interactive system for geocoding and indexing natural hazards \" Natural Hazards Locator System for Jamaica\". This is achieved by integrating various scientific disciplines that bear on the problem and explore the innovative strategies bedded in GIS in the transfer of information to other sectors of the society for an effective and efficient management of environment and prudent land use.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

In 1996, UDS received a grant from the Caribbean Disaster Mitigation Project (CDMP) to prepare GIS- based landslide hazard susceptibility maps for Kingston and St.Andrew, Jamaica including user manuals and guides. The methodology serves as a milestone in landslide susceptibility mapping : http://www.oas.org/cdmp/document/kma/udspub5.htm http://www.oas.org/cdmp/document/kma/udspub6.htm http://www.oas.org/cdmp/document/kma/udspub7.htm
Landslide susceptibility maps were also prepared for the Rio Minho Catchment, Jamaica, as part of a collaborative project with the British Geological Survey and the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom (DfID):

Other activities

The Unit for Disaster Studies , Mona GeoInformatics Institute, and the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute have successfully completed a two-year collaborative project from 2006 to 2008, aimed at capacity-building in natural disaster mitigation in the region. The focus of this project was the mapping and modeling of landslide (Jamaica) and tsunami (Barbados)hazards in the Caribbean region.
