Mission

The Center for Hazards Research and Policy Development (CHR) advances community resilience by connecting research to practice. CHR, is a research unit within the University of Louisville that integrates the skills of planners, GIS specialists, engineers, natural scientists, professional researchers and social scientists.

Disaster Reduction Goal

CHR is engaged in research, education and innovation through a practitioner-based process. With a mission of building community resiliency, our projects share this same general theme. Some specific work areas within this theme that we specialize in include:
• Planning for mitigation, resiliency, recovery;
• Technical assistance through G.I.S. mapping;
• Research on hazards;

Membership in Key Networks

Association of State Floodplain Managers, Kentucky Association of Mitigation Managers, American Associations of Planners

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

CHR is always working on the development of policies to reduce risk and vulnerabilities. We have provided guidance to local, state, national and interantional entities on the subject of disaster risk reduction.

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

CHR is well known for their development of cutting edge Risk Assessment methodologies.

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

CHR is very invloved in providing education through completing various Hazard Mitigation Plans and other disater related planning documents. CHR presents multiple times a year on Hazards and Disater reduction across the world.

Reducing underlying risk factors (HFA 4)

CHR is always looking for ways to reduce risk and using Risk Assessment models to do that. Within these models we identify multiple layers of risk and vulnerability that can be reviewed as a whole or individually in order to understand risk.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

CHR is very active in developing projects and policies for prepardness and effective response.
