Mission

The Armenian Red Cross Society (ARCS) is a non-profit organization, established based on common interests of its’ members, the only national company in the territory of the Republic of Armenia, which does not pursue any religious, political goals, not affiliated with any political stream, which carries out its activities throughout the country. ARCS mission is to reduce the vulnerability of the population through mobilization of the power of humanity, to get prepared to confront situations, where the population can be vulnerable, as well as providing necessary assistance, helping people in difficult socio-economic conditions.

Disaster Reduction Goal

DR goal is to reduce the vulnerability of the population towards natural and man-made disasters through disaster risk reduction on a community level and strengthening Disaster Preparedness and Response structure of the ARCS.

Policies and Programmes in DRR

- Building Safer Local Communities in South Caucasus (DIPECHO 1, completed)
- Building Safer Local Communities in South Caucasus (DIPECHO 2, ongoing)
- ARCS Capacity building in the regions (funded by DFID, completed)
- Building Safe and Resilient Communities (funded by AutRC, ADA, EC, ongoing)
- Safe Schools (funded by Japan Red Cross, ongoing)
- Climate Forum East (funded by EC, ADA, AutRC, WWF, ongoing)

Membership in Key Networks

Member of Platform for European Red Cross Cooperation on Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Migrants (PERCO), European Network for Psychosocial Support, Youth Commission of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, European Reference Center for First Aid Education, Red Cross and Red Crescent European Coordination Committee, County Coordination Commission on HIV/ AIDS, TB and malaria issues (CCM) in the Republic of Armenia, European Network for the Development of Volunteering, IFRC Eope Zone DRR WG, National DRR Advisory Body and Thematic Groups.

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

Advocating and working towards strengthening coordination DRR on Regional level to institutionalize link between local, regional and national levels.

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

Implementing CB DRR which milestone component is Vulnerability and Capacity Assessments (VCA).

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

Awareness raising, trainings, competitions and other educational activities in schools and rural communities.

Reducing underlying risk factors (HFA 4)

Promoting Family Disaster Plan module through schools to families, developing of Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Plan of Action for rural communities. Supporting establishment of “Armenian Climate Forum” Climate Change National Platform, to make CC policy a priority agenda and integrate it with DRR.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

Initiating formation of Community based Disaster Response Teams, trained and properly equipped within frameworks of ARCS Projects.
