Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

SRGDI has been engaging the media in advocating for a DRR Policy and preparedness as opposed to disaster relief. SRGDI has issued articles in newspapers on the importance of having a DRR policy in Malawi. Such media articles have been very instrumental in awareness and influencing policy change.

SRGDI has been organising local and national Disaster Risk Reduction consultative meetings. The meetings have encouraged sharing of information on DRR amongst stakeholders at local level and also those in policy making levels. SRGDI is a member of the South West Disaster Risk Management Consortium. This is a network of Governmental and Civil Society Organisations working in DRR activities in the Southern and Western part of Malawi where there are frequent Floods and droughts. As member SRGDI networks with other organisations in DRR activities.
SRGDI works the following organisations in Malawi.

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

Currently SRGDI is building capacity of Village and Area Civil Protection Committees in Risk Assessment and Early Warning Systems. Through VFL Survey, SRGDI has engaged communities to identify and rank and score major risks in their areas and assess their current early warning systems.

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

Views from the Frontline 2011 research conducted by Sustainable Rural Growth and Development Initiative, Africa Centre for Disaster Studies and Global Network on Disaster Risk Reduction revealed that in Malawi children are not adequately involved in disaster preparedness programmes but are usually the most affected by floods and other disasters in Malawi. SRGDI has embarked on DRR Awareness targeting youth and children in the Shire River East bank, one of the floods prone areas. SRGDI is educating children in DRR.

Reducing underlying risk factors (HFA 4)

In February 2010 there was a Cholera break out in Bangwe Township in the City of Blantyre. Cholera and other water borne diseases are some of the major disasters affecting semi-urban settlements in Malawi. The main cause has been poor hygiene and sanitation due to lack of access to clean water. SRGDI introduced the Environment, Water and Sanitation programme which is aimed at helping communities in Blantyre to harvest clean gravity water from mountains in Blantyre through simple gravity water systems

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

Through VFL 2013 we have developed plans with communities and local government for effective response. This plans will be implemented through Action learning
