Mission

UNESCO gives specialized policy advice and technical assistance to affected governments, UN agencies and non-profit organizations in reactivating education system in post-disaster situations. It also plays a catalytic role, including advocacy, networking and participation in inter-agency activities, to ensure that educational needs are met in post-disaster settings.

Disaster Reduction Goal

With its ISDR partner agencies, UNESCO promotes the integration of Disaster Risk Reduction in national educational plans, school curricula and national strategies, as well as supporting natural disaster preparedness.

Policies and Programmes in DRR

- Implementation of UNESCO's Myanmar Education Recovery Programme (MERP) in Myanmar (2009-2011).

- Implementation of the Education for Disaster Risk Reduction Programme for educational personnel at different levels (2011- 2013).

- Disaster Preparedness and Response Education (DPRE)Working Group Myanmar

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

- Development of DRR Education Training Modules which are designed in line with HFA Priorities.

- Provision of DRR Education capacity development training to educational administrators, school principals and teachers.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

- Translation and printing of the INEE Minimum Standards for Education booklet to Myanmar Language along with UNICEF, Save the Children, Recovery Coordination Centre and the Ministry of Education
- Provision of training workshops on INEE Minimum Standards for Education to educational personnel

Other activities

UNESCO Myanmar carries out the following activities as well:

- HIV/AIDS education for young people
- Conservation of Inle Lake, Shan State
- Preservation of cultural heritage
- Development of media and communication
